Mary H. Werling Melching, 104, of Decatur, passed away on Monday, November 12, 2012, at 2:02 a.m. at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
She was born in Hillisburg, Indiana, on August 22, 1908, to the late James F. Halberstadt, Sr. and the late Flava Ploughe.
Mary married Dorus D. Werling on January 22, 1927, in Decatur; he passed away on June 29, 1931.
She then married Edward T. Melching on August 15, 1936, in Columbia City; he passed away on April 8, 1985.
Jessie James Osborn, 79, of Poneto, passed away at 2 p.m. Friday, November 9, 2012, at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born in Wells County on June 19, 1933, to the late Charles Curtis and Beulah Belle (Folk) Osborn.
Actual demolition of the former Dwayne's Sweeper Shop/Holthouse Drug Co. building in downtown Decatur is expected to begin late Wednesday afternoon and continue during a couple of nighttimes.
Decatur Street/Sanitation Superintendent Jeremy Gilbert said late Monday morning that Fleming Excavating will work Wednesday and Thursday night in bringing down the upper portions of the building.
The annual Veteran's Day service was held Monday morning at the American Legion Post 43 in Decatur, with several local veterans and their families in attendance.
The service opened with the American Legion Color Guard presenting the flags, followed by Ryan Hirschy singing the National Anthem.
Former Judge James Heimann was the featured speaker during the indoor portion of the event and he told of the hardships that many veterans face, both while serving their country and upon returning home.
The Decatur Small Business Association’s (SBA) fifth annual Christmas Open House will be held this Friday and Saturday — downtown and around town, SBA officials said
Over 20 businesses will be participating.
"Begin your Christmas shopping and check out the great holiday decorating ideas plus specials, entertainment, prizes, demonstrations and refreshments which will be abundant throughout the two-day event," the SBA said in a news release.
OSSIAN—It's still early in the season for girls swimming but Jay County, Bishop Dwenger and Oak Hill battled back and forth Saturday for the team title at the Norwell Girls Swim Invitational before the Patriots prevailed by a 239-234-233.5 count over Dwenger and Oak Hill.
Bellmont finished fourth overall with 167.5 points followed by South Adams 136, Norwell 82, Bluffton 78, Columbia City 69, and Adams Central 7.
