H. George Schinnerer

October 15, 2012

    H. George Schinnerer, 70, of Willshire, Ohio, passed away at 11:20 p.m. on Friday, October 12, 2012, in Lutheran Hospital.
    George was born in Willshire, Ohio, on Friday, August 14, 1942.
    He married Penelope "Penny" A. Schmoll on November 5, 1965, in Decatur; she passed away on July 16, 1995.
    He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church-Schumm, rural Willshire, Ohio, and he retired from Prestress Services Inc. in Decatur after 44 years of service.

Loren L. Stauffer

    Loren L. Stauffer, 70, of Decatur, died today at Woodcrest.
    Arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.

Squaws top Wapahani in Quad

      Bellmont closed out the 2012 regular season in style Saturday at the Bellmont Quad competition, taking out 2A No. 1 Wapahani 3-1 with an outstanding all-around effort.
    "I don't know if we're peaking, but we're getting there," stated Bellmont volleyball coach Craig Krull, whose No. 2, 3A Squaws swept Wes-Del in three sets to cap a 28-4 pre-tourney campaign.

Starfire men and Squaws advance to CC state

    MARION—Bellmont's girls and South Adams' boys ran spectacular races Saturday at the IHSAA cross country regional meet at Indiana Wesleyan University and as a result will advance to the semi-state competition this weekend at the Plex in Fort Wayne.
    The Squaws finished third in the 10-team field, just one point out of second place but the story of the day was the huge improvement in times all five scorers for Bellmont recorded over the sectional race five days earlier.

Bengals win DFL championship

    The Burkhalter Plumbing and Heating Bengals finished its domination of the Decatur Football League Saturday capturing the championship game over the First Bank of Berne Bears by a 24-0 tally at Bob Worthman Stadium on DFL Championship Day.
    The Bengals finished the year with a 5-0 slate and got all the points they would need in the title game when Noah Macklin scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 6:30 to play in the second period. Logan Mosser made it 12-0 at the half when he scampered in from 12 yards out for the Bengals.

Six turnovers plague Bellmont in loss, 51-10

    Four interceptions and a pair of fumbles put the Braves in a big hole behind East Noble who scored 42 unanswered points to beat Bellmont 51-10 at the Teepee on Friday night in the last regular season game before next week's sectional.

Boy hit on 13th upgraded to fair

    A seven year-old Decatur youth, Greyson P. Reed, W. Madison Street, was listed in fair condition this morning at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne where he is a patient after being struck by a pickup truck at 7:16 a.m. Thursday on N. 13th Street.
    The condition listed today by Parkview officials is a huge improvement as the Northwest Elementary School student was initially listed in critical condition Thursday afternoon, suffering from head and back injuries.

Candidates get chance to speak their piece

    Eighteen candidates seeking 10 county and political offices participated Thursday evening in a Candidates' Night event hosted by the Decatur Rotary Club. The event, which allowed each of the candidates four minutes to talk about themselves and their candidacies, was broadcast live countywide over WZBD radio.
    Speaking during the event were countywide candidates for coroner, recorder, auditor, treasurer, circuit court judge, two seats on the board of county commissioners and three at-large seats on the Adams County Council.

Walmart gift cards to be used for classrooms

    The Decatur Walmart store recently donated several $50 gift cards to teachers at Northwest Elementary School to help provide much-needed classroom supplies that teachers often pay for out of their own pocket.
    Decatur Walmart Manager Greg Farmer said the company started the program four years ago after seeing teachers buying classroom supplies for students with their own money due to budget constraints in the school systems.

    Ruby V. Blazer, 93, Decatur, died Thursday at Adams MEmorial Hospital.
