Phyllis Ann James

January 13, 2012

    Phyllis Ann James, 83, of Decatur, Wednesday at her residence.
    She was born to the late Loree and Norma (Gray) Heideman.
    She is survived by her husband, Lewis James, of Decatur.
    Among survivors are her sons, David (Mary Whonsetler) James, of Fort Wayne; Dennis (Cindy) James, of Decatur; and Randall (Rita) James, of Van Buren, Ind.
    Visitation will be Saturday from 2-6 p.m. at Ferguson and Glancy Funeral Home, Van Buren. Services will follow at 6 p.m.

Arthur L. McCollum

January 13, 2012

    Arthur L. McCollum, 72, of Keystone, died on Thursday at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. 
    Among survivors are his wife, Paula McCollum, of Keystone; and two brothers, Norman McCollum and Ronald (Cindy) McCollum, both of Geneva.
    Visitation is 1-5 p.m. on Sunday at Downing and Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva. Services are at 1 p.m. on Monday.
    Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Geneva.

Steven L. Whittenbarger

    Steven L. Whittenbarger, 54, of Auburn, formerly of Decatur, died Wednesday at Wesley Healthcare in Auburn. 
    Steven was born to Phyllis A. Whittenbarger.
    Survivors include a son, Jason Whittenbarger, and a sister, Sandy (Chris) Till, of Ft Wayne.
    There will be no visitation or service.
    Arrangements were by Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home.

Ouch! Winter hits hard

    Winter reared its ugly head in Decatur and Adams County overnight, with roaring winds causing the most problems.
    County roads were slick and hazardous due to blowing snow. In Decatur, some streets were snow-covered and others were nearly clear — depending upon which way the snow was blowing.
    The area continued under a winter weather advisory.

City-county building unlikely

    Hopes for a new city-county building in Decatur and a move out of the current superior court building seemed to fade away on Thursday with the unseasonable weather being experienced here earlier this week.

Music House a new option?

    It's been said all along that without everyone on board, a new city-county building in Decatur likely wouldn't happen.
    At Thursday's meeting attended by a number of city and county officials, two of the three Adams County commissioners expressed opposition, but one offered a possible alternative.
    Commissioner Doug Bauman said the antiquated superior court building "needs work beyond what we can afford to fix."

Leo offense puts up century mark on SA in ACAC semis

    FORT WAYNE—In the second semi-final matchup in the ACAC tournament on Thursday night, the South Adams Starfires went up against the shot-happy Leo Lions and had their best offensive game of the season while shooting 54% from the field on the night.
    The only problem was that Leo also shot 50% and hit 13 three pointers on their way to a 105-80 rout of the Stars in front of the Coliseum crowd of ACAC faithfuls who showed up despite the icy conditions.

Squaws handle North Side with ease

    Playing what coach Andy Heim called "our best game of the year," the Bellmont Squaws led the entire way with the exception of a 10-10 tie, and  easily knocked off Fort Wayne North Side 60-41 in non-conference girls varsity action at the Teepee.
    "When we work to get good shots, we can be a successful team," Heim noted in reviewing the 50 percent shooting the Squaws had in the game while they held North Side to 12-47 or just over 25 percent.
