Local MDA collections top $3,600

    More than $3,600 was contributed from five sources in Adams County this year to add to the national Muscular Dystrophy Association fund drive.
    Collections were held last weekend by members of the Decatur Moose Lodge and the Monroe Fire Department. Decatur firefighters held their collection a week earlier.
    The finals totals are as follows:
    • $1,724.04, Decatur Fire Department.
    • $724.04, Decatur Moose Lodge 1311.

Tuition hikes upset Indiana lawmakers

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana lawmakers say rising tuition at state universities is keeping Hoosiers from getting college degrees, but public university leaders say decreased state aid is forcing their hand.
    Republican and Democratic budget leaders on the panel bemoaned that in-state tuition jumped from an average of 12 percent of Hoosiers’ incomes in 2000 to expectations it will account for 19 percent of average income by 2013.

    An Indiana climatologist says the drought conditions that stressed Indiana’s crops this summer appear likely to linger into the fall harvest. It may be a little difficult to convince Decatur residents, though.
    A rainfall of 1.17 inches in the 24 hours up to 7 a.m. today pushed the city's total for two days to over two inches.

No. 3 Squaws tune-up for New Castle with three-game Lakewood sweep

    The Bellmont volleyball machine, ranked third in class 3A in the current statewide poll, tuned up for this weekend's meat grinder known as the New Castle Volleyball Invitational with an easy three-game sweep of Lakewood Park Christian Thursday night at the Teepee.
    The Squaws handled Lakewood without much difficulty in the first two games by counts of 25-8 and 25-7 and then notched a 25-15 tally in the third and final game.

SA knocks off Bluffton

    BERNE—A competitive ACAC volleyball match fell into the South Adams win column Thursday night as the Starfires withstood several Bluffton rallies to win the varsity match in three straight games, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19.
    Chelsea Bollenbacher dominated the front line for the Starfires knocking down 20 kills. She also added seven digs and four blocks for the SA team.

Elnora L. Bebout

    Elnora Lou Bebout, 86, of Decatur, died on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at Woodcrest Retirement Community's Nursing Center.
    She was born on December 11, 1924, in Allen County, Indiana, to Donald and Edith (Johnson) Morrison.
    Elnora married C. Eugene Bebout on April 5, 1946. He preceded her in death on September 26, 2004.
    Elnora was a member of Grace Fellowship Church and had worked for General Electric, retiring in 1987 after 25 years of service.

Lynn D. Fuhrmann

    Lynn Dale Fuhrmann, 51, of rural Decatur, died at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday in Parkview Hospital at Fort Wayne as a result of congestive heart failure, which had affected him for many years.
    He was born on February 17, 1960, in Decatur to Paul and Adelinda M. Buuck Fuhrmann. His father passed away on March 22, 2010, and his mother passed away on October 1, 1979.
    He was a lifelong Adams County farmer and a former employee of North American Van Lines (SIRVA) as a truck mechanic.

Softball tryouts on Sunday

    Girls age 10 and over as of January 1, 2012, who are interested in playing on a travel softball team next summer should plan on attending a tryout session Sunday, September 11 at the Bellmont High School field from 5-6 p.m.
    In case of inclement weather, the tryout will be held in the Bellmont High School auxiliary gym.

$3,747 raised for cancer fight

    The ladies of Decatur Golf Association recently held their annual Susan G. Komen Rally for the Cure Tournament.
    Seventy women golfed and 76 sponsors participated,
    A record-breaking $3,747 was raised to fight breast cancer, the association announced.
    The rally committee — Carol Hackman, Ann Bixler, Janeen Lanham and Vanessa Feasel — issued thanks and appreciation to golfers and sponsors for turning Cross Creek "pink" for a day.

Hearty start opens United Way’s drive

    "Matters of the heart" is how this year's United Way of Adams County (UWAC) campaign chairwoman, Leslie Rhoades of Decatur, describes the 2011 drive toward a goal of $222,012.
    At Wednesday's UWAC kickoff luncheon in downtown Berne, she also referred to the United Way campaign slogan, "When your gift becomes someone's lifeline," and used a simple demonstration to show how even a small amount of money can make a big difference.
