    MONROE—South Adams cross country fortunes went 4-0 Tuesday night as they knocked off ACAC foes Adams Central and Garrett in both boys and girls races.

    NEW HAVEN— The Braves took eighth out of 17 teams in the mid-sized school division of the New Haven Invitational at the Plex on Saturday.
    There were many personal bests from the event's runners from Bellmont. Fourteen Braves posted season bests or career bests as the varsity and JV ran in the same race.

Homecoming king, queen to be crowned at halftime

    Bellmont High School will crown its 2011 Homecoming king and queen at halftime of Friday's football game against New Haven.
    Three senior girls and three boys are candidates.
    The girls are Katlyn Cook, Katie Norder and Taylor Kennedy.
    The boys are: Brian Hakes, Zach Wetsel and Ben Baker.

United Way Night set at Homecoming game

    United Way Football Night will be observed this Friday at the Bellmont-New Haven football game at Bob Worthman Stadium. The contest will start at 7 p.m.
    Fans are asked by the staff of the United Way of Adams County to bring nonperishable foods for collection by the UWAC and distribution to local food banks.
    "Live United — Go Braves" bracelets will be available at the entry gate for $1 each.

Tough winter may be ahead

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana residents who slogged through last year’s icy, snowy winter may be facing a repeat of that icy blast in the coming months.
    Associate state climatologist Ken Scheeringa says the same La Nina weather pattern that brought Indiana a cold and snowy winter last year appears poised to return this winter. La Nina occurs when the central Pacific Ocean around the equator cools by at least 1 degree below normal.

Eileen J. Schumm

    Eileen J. Schumm, 74, of rural Willshire, Ohio, died at 10:15 p.m. Monday, September 26, 2011, in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne after having been stricken ill on Sunday.
    She was born on March 21, 1937, on Fort Wayne to Alfred and Emilie H. Haugk Saalfrank.
    She married Frederick J. Schumm on February 21, 1960; he survives.
    Eileen was employed by Celina Financial Corp. in Celina, Ohio, and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church (Schumm) in Ohio and its Ladies' Aid group.

Kenneth P. Birch

    Kenneth P. Birch, 82, of Decatur, died on Sunday, September 25, 2011, at his residence.
    Kenneth was born on June 2, 1929, in Forest, Illinois, to Sylvester and Ethel (Knuckles) Birch.
    On March 16, 1970, he married Betty G. Arnold.
    Kenneth was a member of Decatur Church of God and a former member of the Pleasant Mills Lions Club.
    He was mechanic for Slater Stainless Steel for 40 years.

Richard W. Conrad

    Richard W. Conrad, 81, of Decatur, passed away onm Friday, September 23, 2011, at Select Specialty Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    He was born on May 4, 1930, in Adams County to Walter W. and Edna (Egly) Conrad.
    On January 20, 1951, he married Helen J. Bieberich.
    Richard was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, where he was a past deacon and elder.

Jack F. Whitacre Jr.

    Jack F. Whitacre Jr., 59, of Berne, passed away at 1:50 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at Chalet Village Health Care Center in Berne.
    He was born on Tuesday, October 2, 1951, in Bryant to Jack and Mildred Whitacre. His father is deceased; his mother lives in Berne.
    He married Patsy Phillips, who preceded him in death in December of 2008.
    Mr. Whitacre graduated from Bryant High School in the Class of 1970.

Squaws run the table on Lady Tigers

    BLUFFTON— After the exciting battle over the weekend against Muncie Burris at the Warsaw Invitational, traveling to Bluffton to play a struggling Lady Tigers squad seemed like a breeze to the surging Squaws from Bellmont as they would go on to defeat Bluffton in three games, 25-2, 25-6, 25-12.
