Sandra S. Butcher

    Sandra Sue “Sandy” Butcher, 71, of Decatur, passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2011, at her residence.
    She was born on July 7, 1940, in Adams County to Anthony and J. Edna (Miller) Gase.
    She married Robert Eugene Butcher on October 27, 1956; he survives in Decatur.

Irene J. Lloyd

    Irene J. Lloyd, 60, of Decatur, died on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    Irene was born on October 24, 1950, in Decatur to Paul and Clara (High) Hindenlang, who are deceased.
    She married James M. Lloyd on November 1, 1968.
    Irene was a member of Mt. Zion United Brethren in Christ Church, was involved in its Women’s Missionary Fellowship, and was an assistant song leader.

Gunman wounded in Friday night incident

    A highly unusual outdoor police standoff in downtown Decatur late Friday night ended when an Indiana State Police trooper shot an armed man from Berne.
    Jerry L. Nusbaum, 67, was shot in the right arm and upper chest and was listed in critical condition at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, This morning, a Parkview spokeswoman said Nusbaum is not in the hospital directory. (Under federal privacy laws, if a patient "opts out" of the directory, the hospital can only say that the patient is not listed.)

Jobless rate in slight dip

    Jobless figures in Adams County remained mostly stagnant during August, according to a report  released Friday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, with unemployment numbers hovering in the same statistical range for the third consecutive month.

Driver’s ed is driven away

    It's one-more-and-done for driver's education at Adams Central High School — the last high school in Adams County to offer driver training.
    At the September meeting of the AC school board, longtime driving instructor, teacher, and coach Cary Blake told board members that state officials have stopped all high schools in Indiana from teaching drivers' ed, although AC got a "grandfather" exemption for the 2011-12 school year.

Braves, Squaws fare well at New Prairie

    NEW PRAIRIE—The Bellmont boys cross country team recorded "excellent times" according to coach Randy Hisner as they finished 14th out of a strong field of 32 teams in the 44th annual New Prairie Cross Country Invitational, the largest such tournament in Indiana.

Squaws finish fifth in links sectional

    BLUFFTON—Just like in an election where every vote counts, the same could be true in golf where every stroke counts, especially if it is from the fifth player on the team.
    Norwell and Canterbury finished tied for third in the IHSAA girls golf sectional Saturday at Timber Ridge Golf Course at 377. With the top three teams in the sectional advancing to the regional this week, it came down to the fifth score to see which team would advance.
