Leonard R. Jaurigue

    Leonard (Lennie) R. Jaurigue, 60, of Fort Wayne, passed away on August 28, 2011.
    He was born February 25, 1951 in Decatur. He was the son of Robert and Bernice Jaurigue of Decatur.
    He was employed for 25 years at the Fort Wayne Foundry, enjoyed cooking and was an avid Notre Dame fan. Most important was spending time with his family, children and grandchildren.

Delbert D. Sprunger

    Delbert D. Sprunger, 83, of Decatur, a longtime civic leader in Berne, passed away on Saturday, August 27, in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born on September 1, 1927, in Adams County to Clarence and Lorine Habegger Sprunger.
    He married Ida Irene Zuercher on September 22, 1946; she preceded him in death on April 11, 2009.
    Delbert and his wife owned the Musik Haus in Berne for 30 years and he was widely known in a 50-mile area as piano-tuning technician.

Audley David Turner

August 31, 2011

    Audley David Turner, 68, a longtime resident of Willshire, Ohio, died at 1:58 p.m. Monday in Community Health Center at Coldwater, Michigan.
    Dave had been a member of several American Legion posts in the area.

Squaws stop Knights

    A tight defensive battle was broken by a great offensive play by the Bellmont in the second half and the Squaws captured a 1-0 win over Norwell in Northeast Hoosier Conference girls soccer to remain unbeaten on the season.
    The 5-0 Squaws had a decided ball possession edge in the first half but Norwell's defense focused on keeping the offensive combination of Taylor Kennedy, Sarah Gerke, and Madison Gephart quiet by keeping five players back and most of the time were double teaming the BHS forwards.

Bellmont netters edge Jets, 3-2

    In a hotly contested county match Tuesday, the Bellmont varsity boys tennis team beat Adams Central 3-2 to remain unbeaten at 5-0.         Senior Payton Selking lost to Nathan Barger 1-6, 4-6 at number one singles.  This was only Selking’s second lost this year including invitationals dropping his record is 6-2.  
    Phil Bauman, now 7-1, beat Conner Lengerich 6-1, 6-2 while Nick Faurote, who just recently won a spot on varsity, lost to Jacob Weil 2-6, 2-6. 

INDOT to move on elevation of US 224

    The turnout was slim, and comments were few, during a public hearing held Tuesday evening for a proposed U.S. 224 highway improvement project in Decatur.
    With only two dozen area residents in attendance, officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation detailed the construction plans for an estimated $3.5 million project that would elevate the state highway by as much as seven feet from the St. Marys River to just east of the U.S. 224 intersection with Jackson Street.
    Construction would begin in 2015.

Bids are taken to finish repairs at work-release center

    The Adams County Work-Release Center, located beside the jail, has been in operation for more than 12 years and, now that its floor has been releveled, additional work is required to complete renovations before separate space is created for men and women.
    Sheriff Shane Rekeweg attended Monday's meeting of the county commissioners with 10 price quotations for varied jobs, all of which were taken under advisement until next Tuesday's commissioners' meeting, a day later than usual due to the Labor Day holiday.

Embattled Kruse now facing Pennsylvania arrest warrant

    AUBURN, Ind. (AP) — Embattled former Indiana auction house owner Dean V. Kruse faces an arrest warrant out of Pennsylvania alleging that he never paid a man $38,000 for selling an antique hearse at auction in 2008.
    DeKalb County Sheriff Don Lauer told The Herald Republican of Angola (http://bit.ly/oFdGlA) on Tuesday that his department has a warrant for Kruse’s arrest on a felony theft count issued in Dauphin County, Pa. Lauer said the warrant had not been served as of Tuesday afternoon.

Jets handle Churubusco in three straight

    Adams Central got back on the winning track in varsity volleyball Monday evening with a three-game sweep of Churubusco 25-9, 25-17, 25-16.
    The Jets, now 3-5 on the season, used a 13-kill, four-ace, five-dig performance from Bess Fiechter to key the victory. Senior setter Alyssa Keller also starred with 21 assists, 14 digs and two assisted blocks.

Arnold nominated for award

    South Adams football coach Jason Arnold was one of 10 high school coaches nominated for the weekly Colts/NFL Coach of the Week program sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
    Arnold, whose Starfires knocked off Bellmont 13-10 last Friday, was nominated in region three. Floyd McWhirt of Wabash High School was named Coach of the Week after leading the Apaches to its second straight win of the season in his first year at the helm.
