Cadets clip No. 1 Squaws in 5-game battle

    FORT WAYNE — Aided by a pair of crucial "in the net" calls during the latter stages of game five, No. 5 Concordia outlasted No. 1 Bellmont 16-14 for the 3-2 victory in a clash of area volleyball titans Tuesday night at a stuffy Concordia gym.
    The Lady Cadets rallied to win the first game 26-24, then took game two 25-20. Bellmont stormed back to dominate game three, 25-17 and won a tough game four 25-23 to set the stage for an exciting game five.

SA boys cop BHS meet; Bellmont cops 3rd place

    South Adams runners fared well in the annual Bellmont Cross Country Invitational Tuesday afternoon with Evan Liechty and Brody Shane placing one-two in the boys race and Hannah Moore and Kristen Muselman going three-four on the girls side.

    Wendell L. Abbott, 85, of rural Decatur, died on Tuesday at home.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.

Helen F. Nahrwold

    Helen F. Nahrwold passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at the age of, 91, in Ossian Health and Rehabilitation Center.
    She was born on April 5, 1920, in Adams County to John and Amanda (Bleeke) Heuer.
    She attended Monmouth High School and graduated in 1938.
    Her marriage on June 22, 1946, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church (Fuelling) in Adams County was to Carl W. Nahrwold, who died on April 9, 1994.

City-county building meeting set

    A meeting will take place next week in Decatur involving city and Adams County officials to discuss the next step concerning the proposal to build a city-council building in downtown Decatur.
    The meeting will include county Commissioner Ed Coil, likely a member of the county council, Decatur Mayor John Schultz, a member of the city council, and perhaps others, such as City Attorney Tim Baker and County Attorney Mark Burry.

A ‘favorite place’ hails Coats’ visit

    Calling Berne "one of our favorite places," U.S. Dan Coats and his wife Marsha visited that community on Tuesday, spending some time at the new Muensterberg Clock Plaza before enjoying lunch with patrons of The Gathering House.

Berne council awards insurance pacts

    Berne City Council awarded proposals for property and liability insurance and workman's compensation coverage on Monday evening after taking those quotes under advisement two weeks earlier.
    Graber Insurance submitted the lone bid for the workman's compensation coverage, at an annual cost of $22,720. That bid was accepted by the council.
    Three quotes were submitted for the city's general liability coverage: one by Graber and two by Bixler Insurance.
