South Adams volleyball coach Ashley Buckingham figures a program that has found victories hard to come by has to go back to the basics.
The 2010 Starfires were just 5-28 on the season and they were 0-8 in the ACAC but Buckingham asserts "we are continuing to build a new attitude in the volleyball program at South Adams. We might now have improved our record greatly last year but we did grow in our skill level and in turn gained respect from our opponents."
Blackford bested South Adams in girls' varsity and reserve golf on Monday. The Lady Bruin first team won, 201 to 207, and the JV team won, 266 to 276.
In varsity play, the Lady Starfires had these scores: Kristen Lehman, 46; Samantha Schwartz, 50; Kristal All, 53; Abbie Fisher, 58; and Alleigh Wingler, 61.
Blackford had a 46 by C. Weeks-Foy, 51 by Z. Mann, 52 by A. Morris and B. Jones, and 56 by S. Batten.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A judge Monday declined to halt Indiana’s broad new school voucher program, saying the law was ‘‘religion-neutral’’ and likely to be upheld.
It was friend helping friend, brother helping sister, sister helping brother and so on as North Adams students converged on the Bellmont Middle School staging area Monday afternoon to find the right bus and head home after the first day of the 2011-12 school year.
All three public systems opened the 2011-12 school year on Monday with a full day of classes.
St. Joseph Catholic School in Decatur was among the schools kicking off the new school year on Monday.
Adams Central High School vocational teacher Jonathan Patterson has been awarded $2,000 by the ING financial services firm as part of its Unsung Heroes program for educators.
An announcement says the awards go to teachers "who have a significant impact on the lives of youth, but remain tremendously underappreciated and unrecognized."
Only 100 Unsung Hero awards were given out this year. Unsung Heroes started 15 years ago.
Diann Rose Gephart, 66, of Angola, Indiana, died on Saturday, August 13, 2011.
Diann was born on June 23, 1945, in Decatur, Indiana to Ambrose and AnnaBelle (Rupert) Gase.
She married John Robert Gephart on September 28, 1963, in Decatur, Indiana and he preceded her in death on October 29, 2008.

Melody A. Shell, 47, of Fort Wayne, died Saturday in Bluffton.
She was born to Ron Pietosi and Rita A. Larimore Foss, who survive.
