Kaczmarek to move on from decorated athletic career

    "It's going to be really tough," said Bellmont grad Dana Kaczmarek on letting go of the competitive athletic career.
    "I cried more the last day at softball ... more than at graduation," said the 2011 Phyllis Hebble Award winner. The Hebble Award, named in honor of the first Bellmont girls coach in about every sport, goes to the outstanding female athlete at Bellmont.

Cornett fans 14 as Marlins take DDS

    Cordell Cornett struck out 14 and the Monmouth Fleming Marlins held off Decatur Dental 7-4 to earn the top seed in the Hoosier East Baseball Alliance Reese baseball tournament, which begins Friday.
    Dental did sock 10 hits off Cornett.
    Lucas Strickler took the loss, striking out 5 with 5 hits allowed in four-plus innings. Jordan Baker struck out 4 with 2 hits allowed in a strong relief appearance.

City-county building proposed

    "Fix it or move," said Adams Superior Court Judge Patrick Miller.
    "Think broadly," said Adams Circuit Court Judge Fred Schurger, because "where we are today is not where we will be tomorrow."

City officials admonished

    Decatur City Council was admonished at its meeting Tuesday night for its perceived lack of support for American troops, and county officials will be hearing the same criticism in the near future.
    City resident Darlene Zeitvogel  said she has a son serving in Iraq, along with six other local people. Her voice cracking, Zeitvogel said she was extremely disappointed that no city officials turned out for the Memorial Day ceremonies here on May 30 "to support my son and six other guys over there."

Horse...uh...‘stuff’ back for discussion

    A messy, smelly subject resurfaced for the first time in nearly two years at Tuesday night's meeting of Decatur City Council: horse manure on city streets.
    Mayor John Schultz initiated the discussion when he spoke of an "irate" message recently left on his home phone by a city resident.
    The caller was complaining about a major mess. Councilman Charlie Cook, who checked on the pile, said it was strung out "for almost 60 feet."

Chalmer W. Reinking

June 22, 2011

    Chalmer W. Reinking, 71, of Steilacoom, Washington, died on Friday, June 10, at his home.
    He was born on November 11, 1939, near Preble to Louis and Esther Merkle Reinking, who are deceased.
    He is survived by his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Kari and Dana; a granddaughter, Michelle; and a sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Joan) Roop of Decatur.
    One sister, Leota Braun, and one brother, Louis Reinking, are deceased.

Betty A. Rice

    Betty A. Rice, 74, of Decatur, died Tuesday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    She was born to James I. and Della McGill Wilson.
    Among survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Pat (Madella A. "Ellie") Baker of New Corydon, and aa son, Donald E. Geiger of Port Charlotte, Florida.
    A service to celebrate her life will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Downing and Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva, with visiting hours from 1-5 p.m. Thursday.

Helen Swisher

    Helen "Jeane" Swisher, 63, formerly of Bluffton, died Monday in Ossian Health Care and Rehabilitation.
    She was born to Paul T. and Kathryn Kohls Heller.
    Among survivors are two sons, Doug Swisher of Decatur and Rob Swisher of Bluffton; a brother; and two sisters, Janelee Yoquelet of Decatur and Paula Heller of Bluffton.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Goodwin Memorial Chapel at Bluffton, with visitation from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
