Thunderbird goes 5-1 for 10s title

    The Decatur Thunderbirds tallied four runs in the top of the fifth inning Sunday in the championship game of the Decatur 10-and-under tournament at Rube Wynn Field and captured the event with a final 19-8 win over Wallen.
    The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Shifferly, Blythe defend county championships

    The Adams County Golf Tournament took place over the weekend with action starting Saturday at the Cross Creek Golf Club in Decatur, and finishing up Sunday, at The Golf Club of the Limberlost in Geneva and both the men’s and women’s divisions were won by defending champions.
    Winning the Ladies division championship play was Brenda Shifferly shooting 86 on Saturday and 83 Sunday.  Pleased with her play as well,Shifferly now has won 34 times in City, County and Club championships in her golfing career.

    The primary requirement of the "judicial needs study" performed by the Schenkel Shultz architectural firm of Fort Wayne was to advise local officials what to do about the future of Adams Superior Court and the county probation department, located in an old and inadequate building in downtown Decatur.
    However, the study also looked a number of years ahead to when a new county jail would be required to replace the current one, which opened in 1980 in Decatur.

Collector coin sales to boost 175th party

    Leaders of Decatur's 175th anniversary celebration have announced that another souvenir is available: a collector coin in a choice of two metals, antique bronze and pure silver.
    The coin has one side with words saying, "Blazing the location of Decatur, Indiana" and an image of Samuel L. Rugg, the city's founder, and a friend, Thomas Johnson, blazing an oak tree on June 23, 1836. On the other side of the coin is the 175th anniversary logo.

Siera Bracamonte

    Siera Bracamonte, 63, passed away on June 12, 2011.
    Siera was born on January 2, 1948, in Indiana. She was one of four children born to the late Robert and Rosemary Bennett and was the beloved wife of Alfonso Bracamonte for more than 34 years.
    Siera was the proud mother of Nicholas Bracamonte (and wife Alegra), devoted stepmother to Yolanda Bracamonte and Lenny Bracamonte (and wife Jamelle), and grandmother of Liselle, Aidan, Mikael, and Roman.

Ralph E. Jackson

June 27, 2011

    Ralph E. Jackson, 81, of Decatur, died at 5:16 p.m. Thursday in Englewood Nursing Home at Fort Wayne.
    He was born to Rolla R. and Oda Gay Jackson.
    He retired in 1969 from General Electric Corp. after 40 years of service and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-53.

Eulogia Serna

    Eulogia "Logie" Adalpe Serna, 78, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2011, at Woodcrest Retirement Community's Nursing Center in Decatur.
     Logie was born on March 11, 1933, in Pearsall Texas.
    She was married to Jesus Zavala Serna for 64 years, wedded on May 13, 1947, in Crystal City Texas.
    Logie was a homemaker and was very involved in the community.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Decatur and its Mothers' Study Club.

Herbert J. Pearson

    Herbert J. Pearson, 80, of Decatur, died at 8:10 p.m. Thursday at his residence.    He was born on November 12, 1930, on Huntington to Edward Cary and Ruby Josephine Bailey Pearson.
    He married Jeannine L. Simon Wright on August 4, 1989, in Fort Wayne and she survives.
    Herbert retired from the Erie Railroad with 35 years of service as a signalman. He was a member of American Legion Post 43 in Decatur and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6751 in Geneva.
