Alexis Harvey, Holly Hankenson set marks for 2nd place Squaws

    BERNE — Bellmont captured eight first places and set four meet records, but still finished second to host South Adams in the South Adams Girls Track Invitational Friday night.
    In the boys meet, South Adams also won that meet, topping second place Snider and third-place Heritage.
    The Starfire girls totaled 116 points to the 102.3 points of Bellmont. Adams Central was third with 80 points.

Squaws blank Starfires 11-0

    Bellmont used a nine-run third inning to its advantage Saturday and posted an 11-0 win over county rival South Adams in varsity softball action at the BHS diamond.
    The scheduled second game was postponed due to rain.
    Bellmont led just 1-0 after two innings with SA's Lily Taing and Bellmont's Brieann Burkholder engaged in a battle on the mound.
    The nine-run assault broke the game wide open for the Squaws and allowed them to win by the 10-run mercy rule.

County students win $55,000 apiece in scholarship money

    Winning $111,000 in 73 minutes?
    Two high school students from Adams County did that on April 29 in a state auto skills repair contest sponsored by the Ford corporation and American Automobile Association.
    Billy Gilson, a senior at South Adams, and Jacob Bergdall, a junior at Adams Central, were the winning two-man team that defeated nine other tandems in the event at Indianapolis.

Monument to honor Rugg, city founder

    A monument to Samuel Rugg, who founded Decatur 175 years ago, will be unveiled in August as the final act of the city's celebration of that anniversary.
    The Samuel Rugg Monument Committee — consisting of Max Miller, Wylie Sirk, and Wes Kuntzman — has announced that the monument to Rugg will be placed near the western end of the Wendell Macklin Memorial Bridge on Monroe St.

    Linda L. Chrisman, 62, of Berne, a former Decatur resident, died Saturday in Adams Memorial Hospital.

    Gerald E. Hobbs, 66, of Decatur, died on Sunday at home. Funeral arrangements are pending at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.

    Diana S. Tonner, 65, of rural Decatur, died at 9:37 p.m. Thursday at her residence.
    She was born on March 22, 1946, in Decatur to Carl and May Kaehr Hirschy, who are deceased.
    She married William D. Tonner on June 3, 1966 in Berne; he survives.
    She was a 1964 graduate of Adams Central High School, a housewife, a bookkeeper for W. Tonner Farms, and a member of Apostolic Christian Church.
