FORT WAYNE — It was a big day for Ben Snider. It was a huge day for Troy Tonner.
The Adams Central juniors turned in some of the best performances of their lives as Tonner won both the shot and discus, setting the AC record in the latter, and Snider celebrated his first year in organized track with a third-place shot put finish and a ticket to regional.
"I'm blessed," stated a euphoric Tonner after a brief celebration with his friend and teammate Snider.
OSSIAN—Bellmont posted its second straight 5-0 win in as many nights and Adams Central avenged one of its four season losses Thursday night to assure an all-Adams County final in the IHSAA tennis sectional being held at Norwell High School.
Or as Bellmont tennis coach coach Tom Smith succinctly noted "we know AC and they know us. It should be a good match."
Bellmont pounded out its win with solid singles play while doubles combination continued to show improvement.
Rescuers and the rescued do not often meet a second time, but they did on Thursday evening at an awards dinner hosted by the Decatur Fire Department that drew more than 120 people, including state officials from Indiana and Ohio.
The major honors of the night were medals of valor, and a standing ovation, for veteran firefighters Jeff Sheets and Tim Ulman for their lifesaving actions last March 2 two miles inside Ohio when they rescued an elderly woman whose car was in deep and frigid floodwater.
The City of Decatur hasn't provided salary increases for its employees last year and this year, but Mayor John Schultz is strongly in favor of doing so this year.
The last pay hikes, three percent across the board, were granted for 2009.
At this week's city council meeting, Clerk-Treasurer Phyllis Whitright presented some figures she has compiled.
Norman Van "Norm" Miller, 72, of Convoy, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on May 18, 2011. He died at Select Specialty Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Norm was born on March 25, 1939, in Van Wert County, Ohio. He was the son of Van and Pearl (Fisk) Miller and stepmother Helen F. Miller.
On October 31, 1964, he married Arlene Arens.
Norm was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur.
Richard A. “Dick” Roudebush, 65, of Decatur, formerly of Fort Pierce, Florida, died unexpectedly in Adams Memorial Hospital's emergency room on Wednesday, May 18, 2011.
He was born on February 8, 1946, in Decatur to the late James H. Roudebush and Audrey A. (Velez) Lee.
Ted Swoveland, 75, of Berne, died Thursday in Chalet Village Nursing Home.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne.
