Jo Ellen Donaghy

    Jo Ellen (Spann) Donaghy, 66, of Decatur and formerly of Bluffton, passed away at 11:27 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2011, at her home. She was surrounded by her family when she passed away. 
    Born on September 25, 1944, in Fort Wayne to Walter Henry and Florence Amelia (Scott) Halt, they preceded her in death.
    Jo married J. Alan Spann in Liberty Mills, Indiana, in 1965; he preceded her in death on March 16, 2003. She married Larry L. Donaghy in Decatur on February 19, 2006; he survives.

B. Jerome Nussbaum

    B. Jerome Nussbaum, 95, of Berne, died Monday in Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    He was born in Adams County on March 10, 1916, to Wilbert and Lila Sprunger Nussbaum.
    Among survivors are a son, Gregg A. Nussbaum of Goshen; a brother, Paul Nussbaum of Berne; and a sister, Ruth Schwartz of Berne.
    Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Swiss Village, with burial in MRE Cemetery, rural Berne. Visiting hours are 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel.

Rosanna R. Simon

    Rosanna R. Simon, 90, a resident of Berne, passed away at 1:25 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2011, at Swiss Village Retirement Community. 
    Rosanna was born on January 5, 1921 in Wells County, Indiana, the daughter of George and Daisy (Isnogle) Myers.
    She married James Simon on March 19, 1938; he preceded her in death in 1975.
    Rosanna was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Berne. She was a retired 25-year employee of Gifford’s IGA in Berne.

Harvey L. Smith

    Harvey L. Smith, 88, of Monroe, went home to live in perfect health with his Heavenly Father on Saturday, April 2, 2011.
    Even among the sadness and loss of a wonderful man, a supportive brother, a marvelous husband, a loving and caring father, and a longtime terrific businessman, the Harvey L. Smith family is celebrating the life they shared with him. 
    Harvey was born on December 17, 1922, to Adolph E and Alice C (Helmrich) Smith.
    On April 9, 1944, he married Wanda M. Baxter.

Fawbush optimistic about Bellmont baseball squad

    Bellmont has new head baseball coach this year in veteran Ben Fawbush, a long time assistant coach in the program, and with him comes a whole lot of optimism.
    Despite losing some of the top players in 3A, Fawbush feels that his club can be very successful. "We expect to have a great team this year. Anything less than a sectional championship is unacceptable in our minds. We truly feel we have a state caliber team," said Fawbush, who kept the veteran staff of former coach Randy Hisner.

Friedt, Baumgartner are champs

    Caden Friedt at 95-pound Intermediate and Bryce Baumgartner in the Novice 120-pound division recently took state championships for the Decatur Wrestling Club at the Indiana State Wrestling Association Folkstyle Tournament, held over two weekends.
    Baumgartner also competed nationally and took second place in his weight class in the tourney held recently in Iowa. Bryce, who has won national titles in prior years, lost the title match just 4-3. It was his only loss in the tourney.

Added testing set for Casting site

    Thanks to $25,000 received from five sources, the former site of the Decatur Casting plant at Ninth St., and Dayton Ave. will soon undergo Phase II tests to see what remains from the initial cleanup after decades of heavy industrial use.

Old photos sought for 175 celebration

    The Decatur 175 Committee, which is organizing a celebration in August of the city's anniversary, are seeking old photographs of Decatur that will be considered for inclusion in a souvenir book for the event.
    The photos will be scanned this Saturday during the Spring Has Sprung promotion of the Decatur Small Business Association. The scanning will be done at The Next Page Bookstore and More at Second and Monroe Sts. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
