Rachel R. Graber

    Rachel R. Graber, 91, of Berne, died Monday in Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    She was born in Adams County on November 2, 1919, to Jacob J. and Lena Habegger Schwartz.
    Among survivors are a son, Don Graber of Geneva; a daughter, Mrs. Bill (Eileen) Daugherty of Pennville; and a brother, Millard Schwartz of Berne.

Virginia G. Mauck

    Virginia G. Mauck, 96, of Muncie, passed away at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2011, at River Terrace Estates in Bluffton.
    She was born on October 1, 1914, in Jay County to Charles E. and Alpha Mae (Gray) Maitlen.
    She married Damon Mangus in 1934; he passed away in November 1945. She married Osa Mauck in 1947; he passed away in 1963.

Jerry L. Penrod

    Jerry L. Penrod, 67, of Bluffton, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday at his residence.
    He was born on November 7, 1943, in Bluffton, the only child of Claude and Verda Gordon Penrod, who are deceased.
    He married Joanna Jump on August 30, 1964, in Uniondale, Indiana, and she survives.

Steven B. Riley

    Steven B. Riley, 69, a lifelong resident of rural Monroe, died at 7:26 p.m. Sunday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne, where he had been a patient for six days.
    He was born to Merle and Ida Girod Riley, who are deceased.
    He married Pauline Schwartz on April 14, 1963; she passed away in 2002.
    He was a member of Salem Community Church, serving as chairman of the board of trustees for many years.

Braves continue tear with 19-4 thrashing of Cadets

    "We are hitting the cover off the ball," underestimated Bellmont baseball coach Ben Fawbush after his Braves delivered a 19-4 spanking to the Concordia Cadets Monday night at the Bellmont diamond in non-conference play.
    Fawbush attributed a batting practice session recently in which "they got about 500 cuts each and it showed. The last four games we have had 13, 14, 15, and 18 hits respectively. These guys know what they are capable of and they are proving it."

Baker’s key double lifts Jets at Norwell

    OSSIAN — A two-run double off the wall in left field by Sammie Baker broke an Adams Central scoring drought and helped propel the Jets to an 8-1 victory over Norwell Monday night at the  Knights' field.

    The crowd was small and the dialog was sparse Monday evening as North Adams school officials held the first of three public meetings to discuss a property tax referendum that will be decided by school district voters on May 3.

Lehman name is on gun bill

    State Reps. Matt Lehman, R-Berne, and Sean Eberhart, R-Shelbyville, have co-sponsored a bill, passed out of the House last week with an 82-8 vote, that aligns Indiana law in accordance to federal law permitting licensed, Hoosier gun dealers to sell firearms to customers nationwide.
     Senate Bill (SB) 94 "defends our Second Amendment right and spurs economic development by removing sales barriers in the firearms marketplace,” said Lehman in a news release.

Lawmakers push looser gun laws

    FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Indiana lawmakers appear determined to ease state gun regulations this year despite reservations from local officials and, some advocates say, gun owners themselves.
    ‘‘I wish the Legislature would spend more time making it harder for dangerous people to get guns rather than making it easier to have guns wherever you want,’’ said Paul Helmke, former Fort Wayne mayor and head of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
