Donald C. Barkley

    Donald C. Barkley, 81, of Decatur, died at 9:24 a.m. Wednesday in Adams Memorial Hospital after an illness lasting one year.
    He was born on January 14, 1930, in Allen County to Alpha M. and Florence A. Foust Barkley.
    He married Linda L. Smalley on October 24, 1958, in rural Berne; she survives.
    He retired as an auto salesman for Morningstar Auto Sales in Decatur following many years of service. He was  a member of Mt. Zion United Brethren Church.

Ivan Nevil

    Ivan Nevil, 72, of Geneva, who once served as Indiana's State Fire Marshall, passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    He was born on Friday, March 3, 1939, in Geneva to Roy and Emma Jane Jack Nevil.
    Mr. Nevil was a 1957 Geneva High School graduate and attended Ball State University at Muncie.

Baird replacement named

    Nearly six months of work was wrapped up in three minutes early Wednesday evening as the board of trustees of the Adams Health Network (AHN) selected a new administrator for the facility to succeed retiring 22-year veteran Marvin L. Baird.

Spring-break activities on tap throughout county

    Twenty-four activities for young people will be available in Decatur, Berne, and Geneva during spring break (March 21-26), courtesy of the Decatur-Adams County Parks and Recreation Department and nine partners.
    Free lunches will be provided six times for youth ages 3 to 18, regardless of economic status. Children do no have to participate in any activity in order to receive a free lunch. Snacks will also be provided at eight events and there will be one free supper.

Patterson resigns as BHS boys cage coach

    Bellmont High School boys basketball coach Larry Patterson became the second major coach at the school to resign this week as he notified school officials and his players of that decision today.
    Football coach Rick Burkhalter stepped down from his position earlier in the week.

OSU, Kansas are the picks

    Entries for the annual NCAA March Challenge will not be accepted after 1 p.m. today, it was announced by the Daily Democrat sports department.
    Well over 100 entries are expected for the contest.
    Daily Democrat sports writers Jim Hopkins and Joe Spaulding have made their picks for the upcoming tourney.
    Hopkins is picking Kansas, while Spaulding likes Ohio State, the overall No. 1 seed in the tourney.

    Donald Barkley, 81, of Decatur, died Wednesday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.

Tony R. Beery

    Tony R. “Moss” Beery, 58, of Decatur, died at his residence on March 15, 2011.
    Tony was born on September 22, 1952, in Decatur to the late Marvin L. and Leona L. (Boley) Beery.
    Tony retired on January 3, 2011, from Bunge North America.
    He was a member of American Legion Post 43 and Moose 1311, both in Decatur, and served in the United States Army Reserve.

Margaret O. Kuhn

    Margaret O. Kuhn, 103, formerly of Decatur, died at 9:05 a.m. Wednesday in Christian Care Center at Bluffton.
    She was born on October 28, 1907, in Willshire, Ohio to John M. and Jennie F. Hileman Byer.
    She married Carl J. Kuhn on June 16, 1935 in Huntington, Indiana; he passed away on August 20, 1993.

Ivan L. Nevil

    Ivan L. Nevil, 72, of Geneva, who served as Indiana's State Fire Marshall and was a member of the Geneva Fire Department for more than 50 years, died Wednesday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Downing and Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva.
