With approximately half of the huge stack of "March Challenge" brackets still unchecked (by tomorrow), there have been some interesting trends, including a strong showing from the "Fox" family.
Middle schooler David Fox (AC) has rolled up 64 points to lead the way so far, scoring 36 points on the East-West side of the bracket. He picks Kansas over UConn for the title. David is 15 points ahead of dad, Dave, who likes Ohio State.
By the end of this year, Adams County must replace all its "stop" signs on rural roads with signs that are more reflective, according to county Highway Superintendent Mark Mitchel.
He told the county commissioners on Monday that he is working with the Butler, Fairman, and Seufert engineering and consulting firm in Indianapolis to seek a $50,000 grant to buy and erect the new "stop" signs.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — State-funded vouchers for private schools and a shift of money to charter schools are necessary steps in the effort to improve Indiana’s education system, the state schools superintendent said Tuesday.
Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett told the Senate Appropriations Committee that he thought the state should seize the opportunity to remake its education system at a time when neighboring states are facing school funding cuts.
Faye Lois Fritzinger, 83, formerly of rural Decatur, died at 10:07 a.m. Tuesday in Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home at Fort Wayne.
She was born on August 5, 1927, in Paulding County, Ohio, to Charles E. and Emma M. Lehman Vance.
She married Arthur N. Fritzinger on April 28, 1951; he survives.
She retired in 1989 from Automatic Sprinkler at Monroe with 20 years of service and previously worked for seven years at General Electric in Fort Wayne.
Louise G. Johns, 100, of Van Wert, Ohio, died at 4 a.m. Monday in the Van Wert In-Patient Hospice Center.
She was born in Adams County on September 30, 1910, to William Thomas and Charlotte Ruth Voltz Johns.
She was a 1928 graduate of Pleasant Mills High School and retired from Continental Can Co. (Grief Brothers) in Van Wert. She was a member of St. Paul's Reformed Church in America.
Celeste C. "Babe" Wannemacher, 90, of Cloverdale, Ohio, died at home on Monday.
She was born in Decatur on October 5, 1920, to Peter and Amelia Bentz Heimann.
Among survivors are three sons, Robert "Bob" Wannemacher of Lima, Ohio, and Kenneth and Tom Wannemacher of Cloverdale, and three daughters: Mrs. John (Charlene) Willey of Mogadore, Ohio, and Mrs. Stan (Bonnie) Mansfield and Mrs. Tom (Mary Ann) Clementz of Cloverdale.

The numbers don't lie!
Adams Central junior Maverick Baumer hit 58 percent of his two-point shots and averaged 15.4 points per game for the Jets this past season. Sophomore Dalton Combs hit 48 percent of his two-pointers and scored 10.6 points per game. Both were named first team All-ACAC in boys basketball Monday.
South Adams junior Dustin Wanner, was also named to the first team.
The Fort Wayne Midget Komets went on a four-game tear at Kalamazoo last weekend and captured the National Junior Prospects Hockey League championship showdown for 16-under teams.
The big final weekend closed out the season for the Tier 1, AAA junior league.
Bellmont High School junior Brian Hakes is a defenseman/left wing for the Fort Wayne team. Cody Rice, a Norwell student, is one of the team's goaltenders and had a spectacular 44-save performance in Sunday's championship game.
If all goes well, the only covered bridge in Adams County will be fully restored by the middle of next year.
At Monday's meeting of the county commissioners, the three executives signed a contract with USI Consultants of Indianapolis for an amount not to exceed $75,000 so USIC can survey and inspect the bridge, create a bridge design plan, draw up specifications for the rehabilitation project, and perform oversight of the bidding and renovation processes.
Two prominent Indiana Republicans will share guest speaking roles at this year's Lincoln Day dinner in Decatur on Thursday, April 28, sponsored by the Adams County Republican Party.
The speakers will be U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman from rural Howe, who was elected after Rep. Mark Souder resigned in 2010, and Indiana Republican Party Chairman Eric Holcomb.
