Decatur police are investigating a high-speed crash on Second Street that took place shortly after noon on Wednesday. Details have yet to be released, although it is known that the car — after traveling at a reported speed of 70 miles per hour southbound on Second Street — struck a residence. The driver of that vehicle was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital with a reported lacerated skull and other injuries.
As is often the case, a new Indiana law appears to be full of ambiguities, and so the City of Decatur's attempt to come into compliance with the state's new law on gun carrying has once again been stalled.
An ordinance written by City Attorney Tim Baker and unveiled at the November 15 meeting of city council and passed on two readings wasn't brought up at Tuesday night's meeting since it apparently wouldn't be in compliance.
Geneva Town Council members accepted the "lowest responsible, responsive bid" for the town's wastewater infrastructure improvement project.
The acceptance of the bid and the issuing of intent of award to Fleming Excavating of Decatur in the amount of $515,818 were announced at the regularly scheduled council meeting on Tuesday.
The Bellmont High School Student Council has found a way to spread their own brand of Christmas spirit, after all it is better to give than it is to receive.
The student council collected any amounts of monetary donations from the student body last week in order to provide gifts for needy children this Christmas. Donations were accepted throughout the school week.
These donations will support anywhere from 20 to 30 children this rapidly approaching holiday season.
Mildred R. Elliott, 94, of Decatur, died at her residence on Monday, December 5, 2011.
She was a daughter of Edward L. and Maude M. Kurt Johnson, born in Decatur on June 27, 1917.
On December 3, 1934, she married Carl W. Elliott, who preceded her in death on May 5, 1979.
Mildred was a homemaker who also worked at the Bag Service company in Decatur and in a local laundramat. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Decatur.
