City seeks to comply with firearms law

    The City of Decatur is attempting to come into compliance with Indiana's new law on gun toting. It isn't easy.
    City Attorney Tim Baker unveiled at Tuesday night's city council meeting an amendment to the city's firearms ordinance. There is, however, considerable question whether or not it will be legally in compliance.

City firefighters help battle blaze in Willshire

    Decatur firefighters, who spent nearly 10 hours assisting with a firefight at Bluffton on Monday, were back at it again this morning.
    This time, city firefighters went east to assist the Willshire (Ohio) Fire Department with a fire at the Farmers Grain on US 33 at the northen edge of the village.
    Fire was reported in a corn bin at the rear of the complex.

‘Today you are killing an innocent man’

    STARKE, Fla. (AP) — A man who was convicted of the 1989 killings of an Ohio woman and her two teenage daughters in Florida as they returned from a dream vacation to Disney World was executed Tuesday.
    Oba Chandler, 65, was given a lethal injection and pronounced dead at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday at the Florida State Prison, Gov. Rick Scott’s office said. The execution began at 4:08 p.m. and concluded without any problems.

    Lois J. Lehman, 87, of Berne, died on Monday at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne.

Ella Jane Schauss

November 15, 2011

    Ella Jane Schauss, age 86, passed away at 10:33 a.m. on Friday, November 11, 2011, at Estelle's House of Marion County Hospice in Ocala, Florida.
    She had moved to Ocala in June of 2004 after having lived in Decatur.
    She loved her family. She also enjoyed reading, watching sports, spending hours at the beach, and watching and identifying birds and butterflies in her Florida garden.

Dennis Sroufe

    Dennis Sroufe, 51, of Geneva, died on Friday, November 11, 2011.
    He was born on December 28, 1959, to Bud and Penelope Sroufe.
    He is survived by his wife, Brenda Seler Sroufe; three brothers, Jim, Allen and John Sroufe; and a stepson, Nicholas.
    The funeral service will be on Thursday at 2 p.m., with visitation one hour prior at C.M. Sloan and Sons Funeral Home, 1327 N. Wells St., Fort Wayne. Pastor Wayne Guilliam will officiate.

Bluffton fire delays White sentencing

    A major fire in downtown Bluffton on Monday delayed the sentencing of Tyler White, convicted last month by a Wells Circuit Court jury of killing his estranged wife, Amy, a former South Adams High School student, athlete and coach.
    It was not clear today when the sentencing will be completed.
    According to reports, the proceedings were only about halfway finished when the courthouse was evacuated due to the nearby fire.

Local waste board stays proactive

    Solid waste officials in Adams County are taking a proactive approach to potential changes in state laws and guidelines governing trash collection and disposal, trying to head off what they believe to be unnecessary and cumbersome regulations before they become law.

1.34 rain falls here during storm

    A powerful thunderstorm which ripped through Decatur shortly before 5 p.m. on Monday dropped 1.34 inches of rain on the city.
    Weather station officials reported this morning the rainfall boosted the St. Marys River almost nine feet, from 3.5 feet at 7 a.m. on Monday to 12.3 feet at the same time today.
    Some broken poles and minor damages were reported in the area.

Merlin E. Bixler

November 14, 2011

    Merlin E. Bixler, 79, Greenfield, former Berne police chief, died Friday at his residence. Merlin was born in Adams County and married Carol (Lehman), who survives.
    He was Berne chief 1978-1992. While living in Berne he was employed at Yager Furniture and Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home for many years. For over 10 years he was director of the Adams County EMS and was the custodian of the MRE Cemetery.
    Survivors include a son, Randy (Kay) Bixler, LaGrange, and a daughter, Brenda (Bob) Bertsch. Greenfield.
