Collier wins big; McKean, 4 Republicans winners in Berne

    Cameron Collier, a Republican, wrested the Decatur City Council at-large seat away from three-term Democrat in balloting on Tuesday. Collier took 63.7 percent of the vote in Decatur's only contested race.
    In Berne, Republicans captured the mayor's office and four of five council seats.
Bill McKean won a huge victory, taking nearly 70 percent of the vote as he assumes the office from Democrat John Minch, who chose not to seek a third term.

Six Braves honored for football all-conference in NHC

    The Bellmont Braves managed to get six of their players onto the Northeast Hoosier Conference list this week as they head into their second regional match ever on Friday against West Lafayette.
    Seniors Brian Hakes, Ben Baker, and Isaac Birch all were honored for their position on the first team, while Cody Walters, Lance Shifferly, and junior Jake Brown were named to the second team for the conference.

Railroad crossing work continues

     Workers from several companies are on the job this week redoing the busy railroad crossing on five-lane 13th St.
    The southbound lanes have been in bad shape for years, and two or three repair jobs have failed to hold. This time, the entire crossing will be replaced, with the project hopefully completed by Friday.
    In accompanying photo, a worker operates a hydraulic lift pulled up a heavy cover from part of the crossing so workers could reach the rails beneath. The cover was put on a forklift.

NA officer renewed by council

    North Adams Schools will continue to have its resource officer, Kriss Affolder, for another year, according to approval given by Decatur City Council at its meeting last week.
    Actually, the city merely renewed its agreement with North Adams, insuring that the officer will continue to work within the school system until next June 30.

Local businesses plan two-day open house

    The fourth annual Christmas Open House, sponsored by the Decatur Small Business Association (DSBA), will be held this Friday and Saturday at 24 businesses to kick off the Christmas season.
    Christmas shopping and decorating ideas will be available, along with entertainment and refreshments, the DSBA said.
    A grand prize drawing will be held for those who have punch cards stamped at 10 businesses they visit. Cards are available from participating DSBA sponsors.

Frederick P. Coffee

    Frederick P. "Fred" Coffee, 88, of Fort Wayne, died suddenly at 1:26 p.m. Sunday at home of natural causes.
    He was born on August 16, 1923, in Adams County to Adrian Henry and Mary Elizabeth Lobsiger Coffee.
    He married Patricia E. Kintz on May 10, 1947, in Fort Wayne; she died on September 6, 2005.
    Fred and his wife owned Graphic Typesetters for 25 years and Gensic Creative Metals for several years.

    Judith A. Ehlerding, 70, of Decatur, died today at home.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.
