Decaur under flood watch

November 28, 2011

    Decatur and Adams County were  placed under a flood watch on Monday afternoon.
    The National Weather Service said there is a 100 percent chance of rain in this area tonight and it could be heavy at times.
    Forecasters said more rain is likely here on Tuesday and, again, it could be heavy at times. It also could be mixed with snow, they added.
    Chances of rain on Tuesday night are listed at 90 percent.

Season-opening event in Decatur

    Despite wet, cold conditions, several dozen people attended the 12th annual Christmas season-opening event on the Adams County Courthouse lawn in Decatur on Sunday
    The Decatur event which included Christmas songs and the reading aloud of the poem "The Night Before Christmas."
    Santa was on hand to greet his many fans.

Berne holds annual Weinachtfest

    Santa Claus was a busy guy in Adams County over the weekend. After greeting children at Berne on Friday, he traveled to Decatur on Sunday.
    Berne held the city's annual Weinachtfest, or Christmas festival on Friday.
    Other events that evening, sponsored by the Berne Chamber of Commerce, included a live nativity scene, face-painting, a chili-sampler, rides on the Reindeer Express train and an exotic animal farm.

Early start on Black Friday

    Kmart associate Mendi Brite was handing out tickets early Friday morning — around 4 a.m. early — at the Decatur store.
    Kmart shoppers needed a ticket to purchase some of the limited-quanity items on special for Black Friday. Brite said she ran out of tickets for the Garmin GPS, PlayStation 3 and a TV with a built-in DVD player.
    Dreama Hampton, Star Hampton and Annie Bertsch were the first people in line at the store, starting the line around 4 a.m. in anticipation of the store's 5 a.m. opening.

    YORKTOWN — "Even though it's early in the season, we were hoping to get them," stated Bellmont coach Brent Faurote, whose Braves have avenged regular-season losses to Yorktown in two of the last three regional showdowns in February.

Braves win opener at Teepee

    Bellmont coach John Baker picked up the first win of his career in front of a home crowd at the Teepee on Saturday night as his Braves handled the Woodlan Warriors, 58-44.
    The Braves jumped out to a 5-0 start at the beginning of the first quarter, but looked a bit shaky the rest of the frame as they came back to the bench down 12-11 after one.
    Coach Baker would have none of it. "This is not Bellmont basketball!" he hollered in the huddle, and his players got the message.

Stars go unblemished in Homestead Invitational

    FORT WAYNE — Twenty-one points was as close as any squad came to matching South Adams in the season opening duals at Homestead Saturday as the Starfires easily took the title for the day with a perfect 5-0 slate.
    The fewest points scored on the day for the Stars was 48 in that 21-point win over Fort Wayne Snider. The Stars dumped the host Spartans 49-21, downed ACAC foe Heritage 50-23, blasted Marion 63-18 and finished with a 45-27 win over Churubusco.
    Homestead was second in the meet, going 4-1.

Nelson Billington

    Nelson Billington, 86, of Berne, died November 24 in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    He was born to William and Mabel Jackson Billington.
    Among survivors are a daughter, Debbie Billington of Allen County; three sons, Terry, Steve, and Jeff Billington, all of Bryant; three sisters; and four brothers, including Bill Billington of Decatur.
    There will be no funeral or visitation. Burial will be later in Westlawn Cemetery at Geneva.

Virginia L. Hower

    Virginia L. Hower, 85, of Bluffton, died Friday in Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
    She was born to John "Frank" and Mary C. Davis Helblig.
    Among survivors are one son, Brice Hower of Bluffton, and seven daughters, Loretta Drew and Brycella Roth of New Haven, Rosie Hower of Decatur, and Mrs. Pat (Connie) Durham Jr., Mrs. Rob (Karen) Trenten, Mrs. Steve (Lora) Esterhia, and Patti Hower, all of Bluffton.

Katharina Lehr

    Katharina Lehr, 87, a former rural Decatur resident, died Sunday in Saratoga Springs, New York.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.
