A special harvest, the seventh annual one of its type locally, took place Sunday on 20 acres of the farm owned by Darrel, Joyce, and Dean Arnold in rural Decatur, at County Rds. 500 North and 500 West.
The corn was harvested by several combines and the crop proceeds were donated to the Foods Resource Bank, which is "a Christian response to world hunger."
The effort was sponsored by the congregations of Salem United Church of Christ, north of Magley, and Plymouth UCC in Fort Wayne.
Good news and better news were delivered on Monday to the Adams County commissioners about the former Decatur Casting site on Dayton Ave.
Larry Macklin, executive director of the Adams County Economic Development Corp. and the person who has been overseeing the cleanup and the marketing of the old Casting area, told the commissioners that the most recent technical analysis of the location found it does not have materials that pose a threat to humans or the environment.
A semi tractor-trailer trying to make a turn from 13th Street onto Nuttman Avenue late Monday evening tipped over, causing a large roll of steel being carried by the semi to break away from the vehicle and also entrapping the driver for a short period of time.
The Decatur Police Department reported that Eric S. Lintermoot, 39, Decatur, was attempting to turn his semi at 11:30 p.m. when the semi turned over onto its side. The steel rolled off the semi and went up over the curb onto the property of the nearby Wendy's restaurant.
FT. WAYNE— For the Lady Starfires of South Adams, it was a battle they never expected at South Side as they took on the Lady Archers in their last regular season volleyball match before sectionals and came away with a stellar four-game victory Monday night, 25-27, 25-21, 25-22, 28-26.
Doris B. (Spiegel) Koomler, 86, of Decatur, passed away on Monday, October 17, 2011, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
Doris was born on April 6, 1925, in Adams County to William M. and Myrtle M. (Manley) Jones.
On February 24, 1946, she married Lloyd R. Spiegel; he preceded her in death on February 22, 1977. On May 2, 1981, she married Gerald Koomler; he also preceded her in death, on November 10, 2008.
Doris was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Decatur.
Betty L. Schumm, 90, a lifetime resident of the Rockford, Ohio, area, died Saturday.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Vincent (Helen) Muntzinger of Fort Wayne, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Zion Lutheran Church at Schumm, Ohio, with burial in the church cemetery. Visiting hours are 2-8 p.m. Wednesday in Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home at Rockford.
MARION-Strong runs by a pair of Adams County female runners at the IHSAA cross country regional Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan University turned out to earn qualifying spots in this coming Saturday's semi-state race at the Plex in Fort Wayne.
South Adams' Hannah Moore and Bellmont's Cadence Faurote both will move on in semi-state Saturday with top 15 finishes. Moore crossed the line in seventh for South Adams with at 19:41.75 while Faurote blazed her way to 11th spot with an amazing 19:58.49 clocking.
MARION–South Adams and Bellmont each placed a runner in the top five of the IHSAA boys cross country regional race Saturday on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University and the Starfires advanced as a team as well to the semi-state competition in Fort Wayne this coming weekend.

The Berne Tri-Weekly News started doing what are called "webcasts" a year and a half ago of South Adams varsity football games and has expanded to do live broadcasts of plays, graduations, and even such Berne community events as the Swiss Days parade.
