Area bands capture state trips; AC misses

    The Adams Central High School marching band turned in its best performance of the year at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Semi-State competition at Frankllin High School. on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to propel the Squadron of Sound into this week's State Finals.
    Norwell, Bluffton and Woodlan bands were among the state qualifiers, the former in Class C and the latter two in Class D. The AC band competed in Class D.

Squaws claim 7th straight spike title

    OSSIAN — Bellmont overcame a spat of first game blahs, then outscored Eastbrook 16-3 to close out game one at Norwell Saturday afternoon en route to a 28th sectional volleyball championship.
    The Squaws, now 29-5, swept Heritage 3-0 in the semis and then did the same to the Panthers, 25-16, 25-17, and 25-10 to win their seventh straight sectional crown under Coach Craig Krull.

Liechty moves on to state finals

    FORT WAYNE—Three Adams County seniors finished their high school cross country careers Saturday in the IHSAA semi-state meet held at the Plex course but the real news locally was the brilliant run of South Adams junior Evan Liechty who soared to a third place individual finish out of  151 runners overall.

Richard H. Allspaw

    Richard H. "Dick" Allspaw, 78, of Monroe, passed away on Saturday morning, October 22, 2011, at home.
    He was born on June 28, 1933, to Robert and Harriet (Humphries) Allspaw in Berne.
    He married Sharon Walker on June 8, 1969.
    He graduated from Berne-French High School and Taylor University at Upland, Indiana. and earned a masters degree from Ball State University at Muncie.
    He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 -57.

Denise R. Brite

    Denise R. Brite, 50, of Bluffton, died on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    Denise was born in Decatur on February 14, 1961, to Joseph J. and Shirley N. (Hirschy) Brite.

Dolores M. Harshman

October 24, 2011

    Dolores M. Harshman, 89, of Kendallville, Indiana, formerly of Decatur, passed away at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2011, at Lutheran Life Villages in Kendallville.
    She was born on October 1, 1922, in Decatur to Frank J. and Mary Geimer Bentz, one of her 11 children.    
    She married Dale R. Harshman on August 22, 1942, and he passed away in 1996.
    After starting out in a tiny apartment, they purchased a 40-acre farm east of Decatur.

Raymond C. Johnson

October 24, 2011

    Raymond C. "Bing" Johnson, 88, of Decatur, died today in the nursing center at Woodcrest Retirement Community.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.

Stars and Jets advance in sectionals

    BERNE— Thursday night's volleyball sectional at South Adams provided confirmation that at least one Adams county team would be in the sectional finals this year, but SA and AC will be playing each other on Saturday for that one spot as they both were victorious over their foes last night.
    In the Adams Central/Bluffton match, the Jets came out slow losing the first game, but came storming back to take the next three in an exciting contest with scores of 21-25, 25-16, 25-17, & 25-15 against the Lady Tigers.

Muncie Burris falls in stunning upset

    WAPAHANI—The king is dead...at least for this year in Indiana high school volleyball.
    Long-time spike power Muncie Burris, the winner of 14 consecutive state championships in class 2A was ousted in the opening game of the 40th annual IHSAA sectional at Wapahani Thursday night by the host team in a four-game series, 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16.

Second draft of Heritage plans offered EA board

    The first of several proposed construction plans within the East Allen County Schools District, involving Woodlan Junior-Senior High School, will move ahead after a vote by the school board this week.
    At a cost of almost $11 million, the Woodlan plan is large enough to be subject to a remonstrance by the taxpayers and voters in the East Allen district. The deadline to file a remonstrance is next Monday, October 24.
