MONROE—Last season's Adams Central defeat of Bellmont was the first in about 13 years and last night's AC defeat of Bluffton seems to have covered about the same duration.
The emotional 59-54 victory by the Flying Jets over the Tigers in the ACAC Tourney came after eight lead changes and six ties and put Central into tonight's second semifinal game around 6:30 p.m. in the Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum against Indiana's number one scoring team: Leo.
MONROE—It may be hard to believe that the most electrifying moment in an overtime game came not at the end of either regulation or OT, but at the close of the third quarter. However, it was true at Adams Central on Wednesday night.
The Lady Jets overcame pesky, scrappy Bluffton, 57-53, in the ACAC Tourney and wound up tied with the Lady Tigers at 48 at the end of the fourth period thanks to a miracle shot for all time.
A preliminary assessment of water leakage problems at Bellmont Middle School has determined that repairs at the school could cost more than $300,000.
Larry Carty, director of facilities and grounds for the school district, said Structure Tec Group had performed the assessment and will set bid specifications for the project. Damage has been caused by ground settling in portions of the middle school building and some irregularities during the original construction of the building more than two decades ago.
When Adams Health Network (AHN) officials were trying to figure out the 2010 budget a year or so ago with crossed fingers they anticipated a nearly break-even year.
Given the fact that the bottom line from 2009 showed a deficit of $1,775,902, the 2010 projections were optimistic at best. But a new program that has done a better job at controlling expenses plus increased utilization of some AMH services showed the hospital with a balance of $660,378 in the black for the past year.
Dean Arven, 91, of Logansport, died Wednesday at a hospital in Kokomo.
Among survivors are two brothers-in-law, Donald H. Harvey of Monroe and Gary Harvey of Decatur, and one sister-in-law, Jane Parker. His wife, the former Dixie Harvey of Adams County, is deceased.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Gundrum Funeral Home at Logansport, with burial in Rochester. Visiting hours are 4-7 p.m. on Friday.
Alfred W. Schott, 83, of Rockford, Ohio, died at 8:24 a.m. Tuesday in Inpatient Hospice Center at Van Wert, Ohio. He was ill only a short time, following an accident at home on January 7, 2011.
He was born on August 28, 1927, in Mercer County, Ohio, to Frederick W. and Wilhelmina Emerick Schott.
He married Barbara L. Mathews on March 19, 1946, in Chattanooga, Ohio; she survives.
Sam H. Yager, 92, a resident of Berne, passed away at 10:05 a.m. on Monday, January 10, 2011, at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
Sam was born on March 6, 1918, in Adams County, the son of William and Lucinda (Hocker) Yager.
He married Frieda Myers on June, 6, 1940, and she survives.
Sam was a member of Bethel Brethren Church in Berne, where he served as a deacon and a trustee.
