Braves have tough challenge Friday

        "We've been preaching that all week, pursuit, angles, and, of course, tackling," said Bellmont football coach Rick Burkhalter on the football fundamentals that Bellmont will have to employ to stop one of the strongest runningbacks in the state, New Haven's Te'Vaughn Hurse.
    The 3-3 Braves, fresh off a disappointing loss to Carroll in a game that Bellmont dominated statistically, have a few things to clean up on defense and special teams this week.

AC faces unbeaten Raiders

    "We must be aggressive and not let them attack us," stated Adams Central football coach Michael Mosser on the prospect of taking on unbeaten and third-ranked Southern Wells Friday night at the AC field.
    Southern Wells averages 376.8 rushing yards per game and gets about 9 yards per carry using coach Mark Lefebvre's Wishbone option offense.
    The Jets have to recover from yielding nearly 500 yards last week at Ball State in a loss to South Adams.

U.S. official: Iraqi who killed two U.S. soldiers was on suicide mission

    FORWARD OPERATING BASE SPEICHER, Iraq — The Iraqi soldier who killed two U.S. soldiers and injured nine more Sept. 7 was on a suicide mission on behalf of organized terrorists, according to U.S. military officials.

MDA collection near $5,500

    Diana Sovine of Decatur, Adams County's coordinator for the national Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon for many years, said this year's local MDA garage/yard sale and a bicycle raffle brought in $521.
    That made the MDA collection total in the county at least $5,500 from five sources, also including the Decatur, Berne, and Monroe fire departments and Moose Lodge 1311 in Decatur.

Iven W. Allen

    Iven W. Allen, 84, of Old Hickory, Tennessee, died at home on September 24.
    He was born to Iven G. and Gertha E. Miller Allen.
    Among survivors are his wife, Betty; one son, Leslie Allen of Old Hickory; one daughter, Pam Allen of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; and one sister, Donna Gage of Decatur.    Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Bond Memorial Chapel at Mt. Juliet, with burial in Hermitage Memorial Gardens. Visiting hours are 2-4 p.m. Sunday in Bond Memorial Chapel.

Jennie Daniels

    Jennie Daniels died Sunday morning, September 26, 2010, at Adams Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for a number of weeks.
    Jennie was born in Adams County on October 7, 1907, to Ulysses and Clara (Brunner) Gfeller.
    Jennie was the youngest of four siblings from parents who had emigrated from the French part of Switzerland to Indiana.

Gale L. Straub

    Gale L. “Pup” Straub, 63, of Decatur, died at his residence on Monday, September 27, 2010.
    Born on May 4, 1947, in Decatur, he was the son of the late Ralph and Julia (Werling) Straub.
    Gale was a lifetime member of the former Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. He was a 40-year member of the Preble Volunteer Fire Fighting Association, of which he held numerous offices and positions, including assistant fire chief and chief.
