BHS moves five to Smith semi-finals

    MISHAWAKA — Bellmont's John Mahlan tripped LaPorte's Alex Stewart at the edge of the mat as the final seconds ticked off the clock in the 160-pound match to advance, and he latched onto Stewart's leg, earning the buzzer-beating takedown to secure one of five BHS spots in the semi-finals in the Al Smith Wrestling Classic.
    The Braves have four more wrestlers on the consolation side and led the 32-team tourney after the first day with 128 points to the 123 of Penn and 121 of host Mishawaka.

Quake felt in this area

    Did you feel it? 
    Many Adams County residents did, starting their day with an event of seismic proportions as the rumblings of an earthquake were felt locally.    A spokesman with the U.S. Geological Survey organization confirmed a magnitude 4.2 earthquake occurred in Indiana at 7:55 a.m. today and was felt in Adams County and the surrounding area.
    The brief event was highlighted by a mild rumbling. And then it was over.

Rifle team people shoot a message to Abel: thanks

    Charlie Abel, coach of the Bellmont High School rifle team throughout its 50 years of existence, was honored at halftime of Tuesday's boys baskeball game with the presentation of a plaque.
    An open house was held at the range following the game.
    An estimated 40 to 50 current and former members of the rifle team were on hand for the presentation of the plaque which noted Abel's 50 years of dedication to the sport and the school.

Herman E. Fox

    Herman E. Fox, 74, of Fort Wayne, died on Monday, December 27, 2010, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    Born on August 24, 1936, in Berne, he was the son of Milo and Mary Fuchs.
    He was a registered certified public accountant and owned and operated the Dairy Queen at Clinton St. and Washington Center Rd. in Fort Wayne, retiring in 2004.  He was previously head controller at Industra Products and had been an accountant at Peter Eckrich and Sons, both in Fort Wayne.

Joan F. Fuhrman

    Joan F. Fuhrman, 74, of Payne, Ohio and formerly of Decatur, died on Monday at Dallas Lamb Nursing Home in Payne, where she had resided for the past year.
    She was born on September 6, 1936, in Monroeville to Noble and Cecil Burkhead Comment.
    She is survived by two sons, Mike Fuhrman of Monroeville and Frank Fuhrman of Decatur.
     Graveside services will be held at a later date.
    Arrangements are by Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.

    Clayton A. Shuck, 4, of Geneva, died Wednesday at home.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur.

    Charles H. “Chuck” Edgar, 83, of Decatur, died Tuesday in Woodcrest Retirement Community's nursing center.
    He was born to Roy and Lillian Whitacre Edgar.
    Survivors include a son, Doug Edgar of Monroe, and a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Fay) Schwartz of Middlebury, Indiana.
    A memorial visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home in Decatur, followed by a 6 p.m. funeral service.

    COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — In a legal victory for victims’ families, Ohio’s highest court ruled Tuesday that a university’s insurance coverage extended to a charter bus that crashed in 2007, killing five student baseball players and two others.

No. 8 story: Berne clock tower

    After five years of meticulous planning and aggressive fund-raising, spearheaded by the Berne Community Development Corporation, the Muensterberg Plaza clock tower in Berne became a reality in 2010, making it the No. 8 story of the year as chosen by employees of the Decatur Daily Democrat.
    Ground was ceremoniously broken in mid-March and work on the 160-foot clock tower, funded exclusively by private donations, began almost immediately.

Baker, Chronister pace Braves by Jets 70-63

    Bellmont guard Joe Baker drilled in two three-point shots on consecutive possessions to start the second period to give the Braves a 24-21 lead Tuesday night and the Braves never trailed thereafter enroute to a 70-63 triumph over county rival Adams Central at the Teepee.
