New Tech: a new way

    One of the hallmarks of the New Tech method of education is tandem teaching, with two instructors assisting and advising a larger-than-usual class as two subjects are taught simultaneously, such as literature and biology.
    Accordingly, when a luncheon meeting of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce featured a program on Monday about the "Jet Tech" system that began this year for freshmen at Adams Central High School, two people made the presentation: AC Superintendent Mike Pettibone and longtime ACHS business teacher Sharilyn Boots.

WorkOne leader delivers some good news

    The president of the WorkOne employment and retraining agency addressed Adams County's unemployment situation at last week's meeting of the county commissioners and had good news about overall economic improvement in this corner of the state.
    Kathleen Randolph told the executives that the county unemployment rate is 9.9 percent, with 1,503 people out of work, but that's much better than one year ago, when the county jobless level was 14.8 percent. The county ranks 48th among 92 counties in Indiana in its unemployment rate.

    The realignment of the IHSAA State Volleyball Tournament will likely translate into a 3A Regional championship match at Bellmont, it was noted today by veteran Bellmont coach Craig Krull.

Dawgs dump Squaws 3-2

    Bellmont led 2-1 in intermission, but two second-half goals by New Haven proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs ousted the Squaws from the 2010 state soccer tourney with a 3-2 win in the opening game of the BHS Girls Soccer Sectional Monday.
    Senior Brittany Thatcher and sophomore Andrea Fruchte tallied first-half goals for Bellmont, which closed out a successful 10-5-1 season. New Haven, paced by goalie Karisa Jacquay, blanked Bellmont in the second half.

Hazel Gerardot

    Hazel Gerardot, 89, a resident of Decatur for 65 years, died at 12:15 p.m. Sunday in The Village of Heritage nursing home at Monroeville.    
    She was born on December 12, 1920, in Salem, Illinois, to Etta Vaughn Beck.
    She married Lawrence E. Gerardot on January 18, 1939, in St. Louis Catholic Church (Besancon); he passed away on April 15, 1997.
    Hazel was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville, loved to play euchre, and was a homemaker.

R. Maxiene Lantz

    R. Maxiene Lantz, 90, of Berne, died Monday in Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    She was born to Alfred and Maybelle Hoover Hollinger.
    Among survivors a son, Richard Lantz of Holland, Ohio, and four daughters, Mrs. Dennie (Sarah) Baumgartner and Mrs. Sherman (Virginia) Lichtenberger, both of Berne; Sally Stuckey of Lafayette; and Janis Stover of New Philadelphia, Ohio.

Elma L. Selking

    Elma L. Selking, 81, of Decatur, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday in the nursing center at Woodcrest Retirement Community, where she had resided since February of this year.
      She was born on January 11, 1929 in Adams County to Emil W. and Hilda V. Buechner Krueckeberg.
      She married Richard A. Selking on July 31, 1955, in St. John Lutheran Church at Convoy, Ohio; he passed away on April 26 of this year.
