Knights’ goal holds up in 1-0 win over Braves

    With Norwell  pressing in on the Bellmont goal, Jaron Moser was able to recover a loose ball and popped a shot high from 20 yards out. The ball came down and just underneath the crossbar for the only goal of the game in the 78th minute as the visiting Knights defeated Bellmont 1-0 for the 2010 Bellmont Boys Soccer Sectional championship Saturday night.

    A good news, bad news scenario was cast Sunday evening by IHSAA officials in Indianapolis as pairings for the annual IHSAA football sectionals were announced for the five classes via a blind draw.

A family member dies prematurely

    He wasn't as famous as Secretariat or Seabiscuit or Man 'o War, but he was quite well-known in the world of mounted competitions — a seven-time state champion, a two-time national champion, a reserve world champion.
    Now, he's gone at the age of just 11. It was like the death of a family member.
    Paycos Bill, a renowned equine racer from rural Decatur, died recently, perhaps from aneurysm, while being ridden by Callie Jo Friedt, his best friend, constant rider, owner, and trainer.

Nancy L. Helm

    Nancy L. Helm, 68, of Decatur, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday at her sister's home in Osceola, Indiana.
    She was born on November 9, 1941, in Adams County to George D. and Kathryn L. Archbold Helm.
    She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Decatur and retired from North Adams Community Schools after many years as a kindergarten teacher at Monmouth Elementary School.

    R. Maxiene Lantz, 90, of Berne, died this morning at Swiss Village retirement center in Berne.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne.

Roxann Schible

    Roxann Schible, 55, of Fort Wayne, died on Thursday, October 7, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
    She was born on July 7, 1955, to the late Charles and Dorothy Spangler.
    She worked for Century Link Company in Decatur for 37 years and was a member of First Church of the Nazarene.
    Surviving are her husband, Brian Schible of Fort Wayne; one brother, Norval Spangler of Daytona Beach, Florida; one sister, Carol Rehm of Orland, Indiana; and three nephews: Brad, Doug, and Travis Spangler.

Dennis R. Welker

    Dennis R. Welker, 55, of Decatur, died at his residence on October 6, 2010.
    He was born on June 8, 1955, in Huntington to Melvin D. and V. Arlene (Pressler) Welker.
    On July 29, 1987, he married Nancy Wyatt.

Annual Walk for Warmth set

    Political candidates will be running on November 2 (Election Day), but people wishing to help others in need will be walking on November 4.
    Millie Deaton, who heads the Adams County office of Community and Family Services (CFS), has announced that this year's CFS-sponsored Walk for Warmth will take place in Decatur on Thursday, November 4, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
